Abstract: The performance of corrugated apron under free flow subcritical condition over the apron was evaluated experimentally. Compared to a smooth rigid apron, the scour depth increased with the application of a corrugated apron under the free flow of jets. Velocity and turbulence characteristics, as well as Reynolds shear stress over smooth and corrugated aprons, were also studied. Rate of increase of turbulence intensity in scour hole due to the smooth apron was found to be higher than scour hole due to the corrugated apron. Scour downstream of corrugated apron clearly shows three distinct regions: jet diffusion, transition and accelerating region as well as the recirculating region at near bed of scour hole.
